The 'Sooper scoopers' flew in pairs and came around about every ten to fifteen minutes at the height of the fires by us (Sunday night through Monday night)

The sky cranes are also dropping constantly because they can fill up from the local reservoirs.
In the case of the 747, for us, the closest capable airport would be either Burbank or LAX. The Scoopers were picking up from Castaic lake, which was centrally located between the Castaic, Buckweed, and Stevenson ranch fires.
I'm sure aerial fire fighting techniques will continue to evolve and capacities and capabilities will improve. I would think that given the circumstances one could work better than the other.
Either way, the aerial support won the war
