Still the first step is to run seatools and see wtf it has to say. That is the very first thing we do to all systems that come in, it test the motherboard, controllers, ram, and hard drive.
If the hard drive doesn't pass the quick test it probably won't pass the full test either.
If the drive is going bad I would give it one go at cloning, either though a local shop or yourself.
THINGS CAN ONLY GET WORSE IF IT IS GOING BAD SO THE LESS YOU ACCESS IT THE BETTER!!
We had a customer come in recently who had a drive that was going bad, but before they brought it in they had everybody and their mother accessing it, trying things out. By the time he got it to us it was too late and his only option was an expensive clean room.
SO UNLESS YOUR DATA ISN'T VALUABLE STOP ACCESSING THE DRIVE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, I.E. CLONING IT OR RUNNING SEATOOLS ON IT.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

The only thing I am doing with it atm is running the ontrack on to recover what is important to me that is savable . If the 1 run of that does not work I will leave it be and find professional help . As much as I hate to say it would end up in the clean room . It has close to 6 or 7 years of photos and only a few are backed up to another media .
i have learned a big lesson here . Always have a back up on anything that can not be replaced .
